Decluttering Your House Ready For Sale

Thinking about selling your home?

Mess and chaos are listed as the top turnoffs for buyers so to ensure you maximise your sale price, a little decluttering and prepping prior to open house inspections will go a long way! Not to mention help with the actual move itself.

Decluttering prior to moving is essential.

There is absolutely no point moving items that you never wear, never use or never even knew you had – to your new digs. As well as complicating the unpacking process at your new place and wasting precious time, it will cost you more to move. So lets contain some clutter and prepare your house for sale…

Top 7 tips to Prepare for Selling Your Home

1. Stop. Sort. Solve

Decluttering and getting organised is a three-part process; first you need to identify the “problem area” within your home; secondly there’s the monumental culling of items, followed by the third stage – the implementation of quality storage solutions that will neatly arrange everything that made it through the selection process.

At Howards, we call it Stop. Sort. Solve. And it works for decluttering projects both big and small.

2. Consider What The Buyer Sees

Having trouble determining what’s to be thrown away, donated or salvaged? We know that uncluttered spaces make the best first impression and what’s more they’re also a lot easier to keep clean and dust-free; so try to envision your home as a potential buyer might. Imagine a potential buyer going through your cupboards or drawers – would you be happy with what they find? Get motivated with your “buyer lens” on.

3. Maximise Wardrobe Space

People love storage space and it’s a huge selling point. If the kids cupboard and drawers are filled to the brim or your built-in is overflowing, buyers will automatically assume you don’t have enough of it. Invest in some wardrobe boxes, dividers and other solutions that will help you make your space look more organised, and remove extra items you no longer don’t need.

4. Give Each Room A Purpose

Hands up those who have a spare room that you’ve been using as an office / guest room / dumping ground? Well, it won’t help sell your home unless you show potential buyers how they can use it themselves. So pick a use for the spare room and clearly style the space to showcase that purpose. It’s such an easy one to achieve; you’ll be wondering why you didn’t do it sooner!

5. Start Packing

It’s not presumptuous to start packing before you sell. It’s a great way to clear out a few items and prepare buyers for the pared back minimalist look at your home. So stack those trinkets away and you’ll be ready to invite buyers through your home before you know it. Keep boxes labeled and neatly stacked in an out of the way area such as the garage.

6. Ask for Help

Call on your family and friends – whoever can lend a hand to make the process less frustrating and time consuming. If you’re having a hard time sorting through your items, or you don’t have access to an extra pair of hands, you should consider using the services of a professional organiser to help direct you throughout the ‘sorting’ and ‘solving’ process. Sometimes we just need a little help to get set on the right track.

7. Schedule It!

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and nor will your entire home be completely de-cluttered within 24 hours. It’s important that you adequately schedule time per troubled spot within your home and stick to your schedule to prevent becoming overwhelmed.
