5 Helpful Hints on How to Organise Your House More Efficiently

Organisation doesn’t come easy to everyone – some homeowners are neat freaks, yet others are completely slobby. Some cleaning methods work wonders for a specific breed of homeowners, yet still others are difficult to get used to. What works for one will not always work for the other, and that’s just how it goes.

However, there are some tips that we can give you that are tried and true. You can use them for kitchen organisation, for bathroom optimisation, for a more comfortable living room, and for a beautifully crafted bedroom. Organisation and efficiency can go hand-in-hand in your home if you just follow my 5-step guide.

And we’ll start showing you exactly what to do, now!

1.

Purge everything

If it doesn’t have purpose in your life, genuine purpose, get rid of it; it’s just taking up extra, unneeded space.

Let us give you a few examples: When was the last time you used that kitchen pan tucked away in the corner of your cupboard? When was the last time you used those old, ratty towels to wash yourself with? When was the last time you opened that side table tucked away in the corner of your living room? When was the last time you wore that old Christmas sweater?

Do items like this really have genuine purpose in your life? Do you remember using them recently? If the answer to both of those questions is ‘no,’ it’s about time to get rid of the items; or at best, donate them.

Think about it this way: The more you can get rid of now, the more space you’ll have later. If you have more space, you can de-clutter, branch your current items outward, or find little additives to place around that specific room.

2.

Clear up some space

If you’re looking to efficiently clear up some space, I recommend focusing on one room at a time. Let’s lead with the living room for this example.

Sit down on the couch or the recliner and take a look around the room; what do you see? Well, now, you see a mess. But, what do you see in a few months from now? What kind of activities do you want to happen in this space? What type of furniture do you want to live in this space?

Envision how you want it to look, clear some things out, and start working on the portrait you have in your head for that room. It may take time, but it’ll be worth it.

3.

Clean your flat surfaces, always

Every interior designer, organised professional, and neat-freak homeowner knows this: Flat surfaces accumulate junk. Quickly.

Flat surfaces consist of kitchen counters, dining room tables, end and coffee tables, etc. Don’t allow papers, plates, and unnecessary junk mail to accumulate on top of these beloved surfaces – it’s not an organisational tactic.

Suggestion: Try cleaning these flat surfaces once a day or once every night. It’s a quick and easy process to get used to and avoiding it will just signify that you’re a tad lazy (don’t be that homeowner!).

4.

Frequently used items should be easily accessible

Let’s put it this way, the things you use on a daily basis should not be hidden at the backend of an unused cabinet. Instead, you should have almost immediate access to them.

For instance, if you use the dishwashing soap every night to clean the dishes after you eat, it should be within reaching distance. Maybe not in plain view, because this could look unorganised, but it should definitely be directly under the sink at a moment’s grab.

On the other hand, if you don’t use something frequently, we encourage you to store it away in an area of the house that doesn’t need to be accessed frequently. For instance, you don’t need to have fine china out in the open all the time – this could damage the expensive dishes and cutlery. Instead, a better place for them might be in a safe closet located at the end of the hall (only an example; of course, there are other places to put fine china).

5.

Put items close together that are used for similar purposes – and label if you need quick access to them

This last tip works well in rooms like the kitchen and bathroom.

For instance, grouping similar items together like spices, canned goods, and baking supplies will do you good when organising in the kitchen. On the other hand, grouping similar items like face cloths, towels, and toilet paper will do you good in the bathroom.

Suggestion: Use bins or containers to house such similar items. If you want extra easy access to these items, attach a delicate tag to the bin or container with a general name written on it. For instance, in the kitchen, you could write ‘spices’ on a tag, and in the bathroom, you could write ‘towels’ on a tag. That way, instead of looking into every basket, you can just pull out the basket you need and take what you want.

These organisation tips are very basic, and they can help the most experienced organiser, or they can help the organiser that’s just starting to learn. Once you have these set in stone in your household, you can then move on to more complicated ‘neat freak’ skills.
