Stay Safe with Howards

Every product sold at Howards is BPA free. That’s reassuring. But what exactly is BPA?

Well, if you like a bit of science, BPA is an abbreviation Bisphenol A, a man-made carbon-based synthetic compound with the chemical formula (CH3)2C(C6H4OH)2 belonging to the group of diphenylmethane derivatives and bisphenols.

For those of us who don’t spend most of the day in a lab coat, the simple fact is that BPA is an industrial chemical used in the production of some plastics since the 1960s, most notably plastic food containers and bottles.

Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. This is obviously a concern as Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor– a substance that interferes with the production, secretion, transport, action, function and elimination of natural hormones.

To put it another way, BPA can imitate our body’s own hormones in a fashion that could be hazardous for health. Babies and young children are said to be especially sensitive to the effects of BPA, but links have been made between the chemical and heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, brain function, reproductive disorders, breast cancer and more.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the weight of scientific evidence currently available indicates that BPA in plastics does not present a risk to human health. However, the commission does accept that traces of BPA can leach into food, which is why Howards takes a better-safe-than-sorry approach.

So, whether you’re storing fruit in a Howards VacSeal Container, drinking coffee on the go from Contigo Morgan Mug or taking your sandwiches to work in a Howards Smart Lock Container, you can be assured that you’re doing so in total BPA-free safety.
