Time and Money saving ideas for your Fridge

Fridge Organisation

Here’s how…

According to research*, Australians waste up to 20% of food they purchase.  For the average household, this represents over $1000 in waste per year!  Given that 33% of this waste is fresh food, organising your fridge can significantly help. It takes very little time to put in place a better fridge system to help you take better control of your fresh produce.  Run a family experiment and see how much you can save in a year!

Fridge do’s and don’ts to reduce waste and also to reduce the chances of cross contamination:

Do

  • Store vegetables in a separate section to meat

  • Store raw food separate from cooked food

  • Put like items together, preferably in a labeled caddy

  • Choose strong, non-toxic food storage containers that are clean and in good condition, with a tight fitting lid

  • Only use your food containers for food, don’t use them for example for storing money

Don’t

  • Store food in open cans

  • Consume food if you are unsure about its use by date

  • Consume food if you are unsure about its use by date

  • Allow meat juices to drip onto other foods

  • Consume perishable food that has been out of the fridge for over 4 hours

How to improve your Fridge Organisation

Here are some top tips for keeping your fridge better organised.

  • Keep like items together

Fruit, vegetables, meat, cold cuts, drinks, dairy, condiments, and leftovers – group them and give them a dedicated space with a caddy like Marie fridge baskets or Howards Amalie organisers that are available in two sizes.

  • Prioritise your Zones!

High use items deserve the most accessible zone. Likewise, items you use little can take the least accessible space. This is a great time saver.

  • Choose Quality Containers

for your left overs like Howards NEW VacSeal containers that come in many sizes and vacuum seal with one touch. HOT TIP: Vacuum containers reduce marinating time for meats as they open up the fibres in the meat.

  • Keep fresh food fresh longer …

Have you heard of Howards Keep Fresh? It’s a clever cartridge that has been proven to extend the life of fruit & vegetables in the fridge for up to 6 weeks!
