Top 6 Pantry Essentials

Life is busy so when your pantry’s disorganised, there can be a huge ripple effect; from food wastage (which essentially equates to wasted money) to the time you can lose simply looking for various items, there’s something to be said for having your pantry items in a designated spot. Pantries come in many shapes and sizes; some are big, others are small and they generally come in the form of drawers, shelves or a walk-in space. Whatever your configuration, you can be guaranteed that ‘organisation’ will ensure you make the most of your space. Here are our Top 5 essentials…

1. A Good Shelving System

You can’t underestimate the importance of utilising vertical wall space; and to achieve that, a good quality shelving system is key. Take Neata™ for example. A simple yet sturdy system, Neata can be customised and configured to suit your storage needs. While Neata works well within a straightforward space, if you’re struggling to maximise storage in an odd shaped pantry, Neata shines. Perhaps you’d prefer a durable, yet more temporary solution? Made from triple coated chrome, the freestanding Easy-Build  is a components based system so you can make almost anything!! Easy to use, is portable and can be big enough to make a difference to your kitchen storage or small enough to fit into any corner. Perfect for keeping your everyday pantry essentials within reach, this open shelf system is designed to keep you clutter free. Alternatively, Swedish designed and built, Elfa® shelving is engineered to hang from a single fixed top rack and can reconfigured at any time – quickly and simply.

Quality is at the forefront of all our shelving systems. Neata and Elfa come with a 10 year warranty, and Easy-Build has a 5 year warranty. Now that’s peace of mind!

2. Durable Containers

There’s no underestimating the value of a good quality container system (or a combination of a few of them!) Not only do they work to keep food fresh and to keep out pests, they will maximise the space on your shelves and the functionality of your drawers. We have a number of exceptional container systems available online and in-store and we recommend modular stackable storage for optimum efficiency, such as Oxo Pop. These clever containers ensure there’s no wasted ‘airspace’ between shelves and within drawers, they’re designed with a unique airtight push button mechanism, are available in square and rectangular shapes; while their transparent finish ensures easy visibility.

Similarly, European designed and made, Rosti modular storage containers are just so versatile. BPA free, dishwasher safe and created with an airtight seal, these transparent containers enable you to see the contents as well as the quantity of food being stored at any one time. Thanks to a clear lid, this range works well within pantry drawers. Furthermore they’re stackable and uniquely created to especially suit today’s modern fridge or pantry space.

Howards own Aamina Easy Access Storers are available in 2 sizes, have a flexible airtight lid, are stackable with an easy to reach handle. Perfect in the pantry for cereals and pasta.

5. Easily Identifiable Zones

Refilling your pantry in organised zones is the best way to ensure you don’t have to do another pantry overhaul in a couple of months. Before you start rearranging the entire contents of your pantry, have a think about who the pantry needs to serve. For example if you’re the primary chef within the home, ensure that items you use regularly are kept at eye level in a high access area. Similarly if you have children, keep nutritious help-yourself-healthy treats as well as lunch and snack bags/containers grouped together in an easy-to-access spot just for them.

Meanwhile heavy items should reside within the lower realms of your pantry so you can safely access these as needed. With items allocated to specific zones, you will save valuable time, alleviate clutter and create a pantry that can be easily stocked and utilized by any number of people living within a household.

6. Invest in a Foot Stool/Step Ladder

Plain and simple, by having a footstool or a small stepladder within your pantry, reaching high shelves becomes a cinch. Sturdy and safe, our collection of stools range from durable plastic to anodized aluminum, all of which are lightweight, easy to carry from room too room (if needed) and won’t take up much space! You’ll be amazed at how much time you can save by being able to locate the reserves of pasta on the first try.
