The Living Room Makeover
We’ve been busy! We recently had the pleasure of teaming up with Barry Du Bois’ Reno Team from Channel 10’s The Living Room, along with US organising and decluttering expert Peter Walsh. Together we completely overhauled a young family’s study and garage…what a privilege and what a transformation!
To give you some background, our family, (David, Heidi and their two lovely daughters!) were overwhelmed with the clutter that had built up in their study and garage. Heidi explained to our team that she felt overburdened by the clutter and she needed a solution that would help them reclaim control of their space. The flow on from the clutter in the study meant that David had set up his workstation in the dining room, which presented an even bigger problem come mealtime; and of course a cluttered garage meant there was no space to store the family car. On top of that, Heidi’s craft business was spread between the upstairs study and the garage. Beginning to get the picture?
The Plan? STOP, SORT, SOLVE of course!
STOP – We assessed the issues and what indeed needed to change:
- We needed to create a space for Heidi’s craft business & a space for David to work.
- Garage tools needed to be easily accessible. Given the garage design, we could create a “studio” for Heidi in part of the space.
- We noted that the desk in the dining room and the bookshelf from the study could be recycled and moved into Heidi’s studio.
- If we dedicated one garage wall to tools, they would be accessible and it would keep items that bring “dirt” into the garage (such as mowers), in a specified spot that could be easily swept clean.
The long wall in the garage was being used for “archive” style storage but we could see there was an opportunity to make this more efficient with big wide shelves. We could also make better use of the awkward space under the stairs.
And so began SORTING time!
Room 2 – The Garage:
We installed a full elfa garage solution including specialty holders for David’s drills and tools (even the ladder was given a hook!). The track system allowed us to accommodate all of the gardening items and keep them visible and accessible. Even the bikes were given a home of their own on a bike rack!
Room 3 – The Studio (we create 4 zones):
The Design Bench: We created a design bench using two elfa drawer units connected to a melamine top. We also added a clever set of metal drawers to the bench and clear acrylic organisers from our Allure and ZAK ranges to display Heidi’s jewellery creations.
The Central Work Table: Barry’s Reno Team repainted an old dining room table white while Peter thoughtfully placed key pieces of the children’s artwork under the laminate to keep precious memories in view.
We told you we’d been busy but what an incredible transformation! Don’t you just love a good before and after shot? This was easily one of the most exciting makeovers we’ve had the pleasure of being involved in and we’re thrilled that our homeowners were so moved by the result.
