Homeowners Helena and Pete were in desperate need of a laundry makeover. Pete had attempted to rescue the room himself, yet called his effort ‘a DIY half-finished disaster’.The last room in their home to be renovated, this couple needed a plan to rearrange and save their laundry from its poor layout, inadequate light and next-to-no storage.
Howard’s own expert organiser Cathy Player explains, “In order for this makeover to be a success it was important to freshen up the room and make it feel light, breezy and bright.”
Interestingly, pre-makeover the washer and dryer were placed on top of each other. This is the first thing that was changed to open the room up. “So often people think that placing your dryer on top of your washing machine is the way to go with your laundry,” Cathy says, “In this case, it was closing in the space and it also created an opportunity to build in work benches for folding.”
With the painting, gyprock and construction taken care of, Howards came to the rescue with a few high efficiency strategies.
“Above the machine and dryer the couple installed elfa® shelving with white ventilated shelves and white décor trim to add storage space and of course, freshness. By adding folded towels and square wicker baskets to the shelves they instantly warmed up the space. It was a very simple solution.”
Cleverly, the top track goes right across the top of the wall so Helena and Pete have the flexibility to add extra elfa® items at any given time. To further make use of the vertical wall space, a wall mounted Artweger Ruckzuck Airer and an Ironing Board were installed. The ironing board can swivel either way and folds away with a cover to complete the unit.
The existing white cupboard was put to better use by grouping cleaning items and supplies in Mimi Separators and Clara Organiser Baskets. These inexpensive caddies instantly added order to a previously hectic space as well as improving the cupboards efficiency. Now Helena and Pete can see at a glance where things are and where they need to be put away.
But just what sort of difference has the laundry update made? We caught up with Helena and found out:
Tell us about ‘laundry life’ since the makeover?
“It’s a more organised space; it’s a lot more functional. It’s easier to find things, especially in the cupboard; I’ve rearranged a few things and placed them into groups like cleaning equipment and laundry items then stored them in Mimi plastic containers. They’re really easy to access too.”
Has the new system been able to save you time? How?
“Yes it has. I can find things easily in the cupboard. It’s easier to get to, it’s not so cluttered and I can see what’s needed.”
What’s been the biggest learning curve in conducting this makeover?
“The room still houses things that aren’t necessarily laundry related but because of the new system in the laundry, everything is in its own place and those things can be stored away in the cupboard out of sight. Having a place for everything is really important.”
What’s been your favourite product from the makeover?
“I would have to say the ironing board! It’s great not having something that’s permanently out and yet so easy to get to when I need it. It’s easy to use and when I’m finished with it I just fold it up and I have plenty of room to get to the dryer. It’s been really handy.”
