Top Laundry Time Saving Strategies
Love it or hate it, there’s no escaping the laundry. Whether you pop one load on a day or you dedicate a few consecutive hours to cleaning clothes and linen each week, it’s a job that simply can’t be avoided. We can, however, suggest a number of time saving strategies that will minimise the hours spent pre-sorting, removing stains, ironing and distributing cleaned items. Let’s take a closer look.
Check Your Workflow / Zones
First and foremost, do you have everything you need in order to complete the laundry task, in one organised and specific spot? Improve the overall effectiveness of your laundry with a well-organised workflow, and you’ll save time each and every time you use the space. With a little planning, your laundry can be everything you need it to be; consider then, that a solid workflow should include a:
Incorporate a pre-sorting zone into your laundry and have each family member pre-sort his or her own clothes. Position your pre-sorting hampers in a convenient, everyone-can-access-it location within your home
Cleaning and Mending Zones
Be ready for anything and don’t waste time searching for your sewing kit! Whether you’re removing stains or mending buttons back onto shirts prior to the washing cycle, ensure your cleaning and mending items are accessible at all times.
While dryers tend to trap moisture, air-drying introduces moisture into the air, which can speed up the drying process. Furthermore when you line dry your clothes you can often avoid ironing, and, if you didn’t quite get that mark out, you needn’t worry about the heat setting a stain in your clothes!
Position your folding bench as close to your drying zone and distribution baskets as possible. Much like your pre-sorting zone, if you can reduce the amount of steps required between these areas, you’ll save time here as well.
Allocate a distribution basket to each family member and have each person pack away their own cleaning washing. It beats having a washing basket on the kitchen bench any day and think of the time you’ll recoup for you!
Use the right equipment correctly!
Take the ironing for example. Did you know that the way you wash your clothes can affect your ironing time? By reducing your spin cycle and not overloading your machine, you can moderate creases and ensure clothes have room to breathe. Once clothes are out of the machine, consider placing some of your garments on hangers while they’re wet, and then hang them on an airer. It’ll reduce the number of creases and ultimately your ironing time.
Choose the Right Ironing Board
Then there’s your ironing board itself! Did you know that by using a quality ironing board you iron up to 33% faster, which, lets face it, would make a world of difference to your ironing routine.
Our Leifheit Ironing Board Airboard has thermoreflect technology that traps heat/steam that effectively irons both sides of your garment at the same time. Their studies have shown this cuts ironing time down by a third!
An Airer will save you more than just time, you’ll save money, reduce your carbon footprint and protect your clothing from the wear and tear of a dryer. The right airier is essential to make the most of your space.
The laundry needn’t be a mum or dad ONLY zone! By implementing simple, age appropriate, family friendly strategies, such as a ‘pre-sort as you go’ system; and assigning a distribution basket to every family member so they can place their own clean clothes back in their cupboard; you essentially share the load (pardon the laundry pun) with your tribe. Furthermore, by getting them involved at an early stage, you’ll teach them independence and teamwork; not to mention how much time you could save! Remember though to think about how much each child can reasonably contribute and be clear when establishing your expectations.
Clean it Properly The First Time
So often it can just be a case of set and forget when it comes to the washing. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, one of the easiest ways to reduce the amount of time spent in the laundry is to make sure you clean your items the right way, the first time around; and this essentially comes down to organisation. So much of our time consumed in laundries is because we have a disorganised laundry, where clothes have to be re-washed multiple times to try and remove stains; our grandmothers had it right when they said ‘a stitch in time saves nine’. Indeed, a little care now will prevent a lot of fuss later.
